NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City woman will serve one year in prison for beating her puppy and tossing the injured animal from her car window.

Thirty-five-year-old Alsu Ivanchenko (eeh-vahn-CHEN’-koh), of State Island, was convicted of abusing her less-than-2-pound Maltese Shih-Tzu last year. The dog, named Snowflake, suffered skull fractures, head trauma and bruising. Prosecutors say she then discarded the puppy by the train tracks near her home.

Snowflake recovered and is now living in a Manhattan home.

Ivanchenko was convicted of cruelty to animals at a non-jury trial.

She was ordered Monday to pay almost $22,000 in restitution to the animal welfare advocates.

Prosecutors said she tossed the dog because she claimed she couldn’t afford the dog’s medical care. Snowflake had been diagnosed with a broken leg, lethargy and abdomen tenderness.
