LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Police have arrested the parents of an Arkansas 2-year-old who died last week after accidentally shooting himself with a handgun.

Benton police announced Monday that the child’s parents had been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and endangering a child.

Jail records show the 27-year-old man and his 23-year-old wife were being held Monday in the county jail pending formal charges and a bond hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

No attorney information was listed for the couple.

Police say the 2-year-old accidentally shot himself with a .45 caliber pistol. The investigation is still ongoing, and police say more charges could be filed.

Saline County court records show that relatives petitioned for custody of the couple’s other child on Monday.
