MOUNT AIRY, N.C. (AP) - A man died after being hit by a North Carolina Highway Patrol vehicle in Surrey County.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol tells local media that 78-year-old Romie Clark Bobbitt was walking across Interstate 74 Saturday evening when he was hit by a state trooper. Bobbitt died at the scene.

Authorities believe Bobbitt was driving a vehicle that had been side-swiped by another car. When Bobbitt saw a trooper performing a routine traffic stop, he pulled over, left his vehicle and walked toward the trooper. He was then hit by a Highway Patrol SUV.

The trooper who hit Bobbitt was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. She is on administrative duty while this crash is being investigated.

The names of the two troopers have not been released.
