VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - The superintendent of Vancouver Public Schools has been named the 2016 Washington superintendent of the year.

The Washington Association of School Administrators announced the award for Steven Webb at its weekend meeting in Bellevue, Washington.

Webb was recognized for his efforts to expand school choice, build community partnerships to help low-income kids and for leading an effort to increase the district’s on-time graduation rate from 64 percent to 80 percent in five years.

The association says Vancouver is a good example of a school district that is making progress for its students, from shrinking the achievement gap to graduation rates and college attendance.

As the state’s superintendent of the year, Webb also will be a candidate for the national honor.
