KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - A $1 million gift from the Bernard Osher Foundation will support Western Michigan University’s efforts to boost communitywide education with courses and trips.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1NbxKUC ) school President John M. Dunn announced the award for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute to set up an endowment earlier this month.

The foundation also awarded the school a $50,000 bridge grant, which represents interest that the endowment is expected to generate.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Western Michigan University offers noncredit programs in southwestern Michigan. More than 900 people participate annually.
