ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta police say the death of an infant has been ruled a homicide.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (https://on-ajc.com/1MASDa8 ) reports that police are investigating after the Fulton County medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.

Atlanta police spokeswoman Elizabeth Espy told the newspaper that Monte Jones, who would have been 9 months old on Thanksgiving Day, died Nov. 11, two days after being taken to an emergency room with serious injuries.

The boy’s mother told police she had gone to work and left her three children with a neighbor. She said she was called at work to go to the emergency room.

Lt. Charles Hampton, of the Atlanta Police Department, told WSB-TV (https://bit.ly/1lIqt4k ) that the infant had “significant injuries, as well as evidence of a sexual assault.”

Police said the child’s mother is cooperating with the investigation.

“The baby was so sweet. The last time I held him he was smiling, just a beautiful spirit,” Edwina Jones-Burton, the baby’s great aunt, told the station
