WASHINGTON (AP) - Mitsubishi is donating $1 million to the Smithsonian’s museums of Asian art aimed at expanding communication among Japanese and American audiences and scholars.

The gift announced Tuesday will support Japanese initiatives at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery through 2020. The Smithsonian says it is the first time that a private corporation has sponsored exhibitions and staffing to the galleries.

Mitsubishi Corp.’s donation will support outreach to Japanese audiences, both the public and scholars, through enhanced Web communication. It will also support exhibitions that emphasize collaboration between specialists in both nations and enhanced bilingual staffing in administrative areas.
