PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say a suspect will face numerous felony charges once he’s released from a hospital where he’s being treated for wounds suffered when two officers shot back after he allegedly opened fire on them.

Police say the incident happened Monday afternoon outside a northwest Phoenix church where the 29-year-old suspect fled after an officer saw him apparently checking vehicle doors in a parking lot in the area.

Sgt. Trent Crump says the man took cover on a second-story landing before two officers ordered him to surrender. According to Crump, the man was hit by officers’ return fire after he emerged with a handgun and began shooting at the officers.

He then surrendered and was hospitalized for treatment of wounds that Crump says aren’t life-threatening.

The man’s identity wasn’t released.
