SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a San Francisco man has died while diving for abalone.

The Press Democrat reports (https://bit.ly/1MOM8hS ) that local volunteer firefighting chief Greg Warner says the 56-year-old man was swimming out into the ocean off the southern Mendocino Coast on Sunday when he began to struggle.

The diver’s friend swam over, yelled for help and began pull the man toward the shore of Cook’s Beach.

Warner says emergency personnel didn’t have access to a boat or helicopter, so they waited for the pair to reach shore. Emergency responders determined that the man was dead.

Warner says the victim and his partner had dived the day before without problems. But he says the victim was using only a 1-gallon container as a flotation device and may not have been fit enough for the activity.
