NEW CITY, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say 30 have been arrested in a drug ring they say originated out of a suburban New York hotel room.

The Journal News reports (https://lohud.us/1kT68Jr ) Rockland County prosecutors announced the charges Tuesday in what they say was a large-scale narcotics trafficking operation.

Spring Valley Police Chief Paul Modica says the defendants are a “poison to the community.” He says one of the defendants was arrested after allegedly buying heroin while driving a 13-year-old boy home from football practice.

Authorities say many of the defendants are accused of selling crack cocaine, powdered cocaine and heroin.

Officials say the investigation dubbed “Operation Money Mike” marks the first time Rockland County prosecutors have brought charges under the state’s “kingpin statue,” which strengthens penalties for major drug dealers.
