RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island man is heading to prison after admitting to being behind the wheel of a speeding car that flipped, killing his friend last year.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1NOCmfM ) 20-year-old Brandon Charles was sentenced Tuesday to three to nine years behind bars. He pleaded guilty in September to second-degree manslaughter in the November 2014 death of 19-year-old Carla Flores.

Authorities say it was unclear who was driving the vehicle until investigators tested a spot of blood on the driver’s side of the car to the Wheatley Heights resident. The judge chastised him for trying to evade responsibility.

Charles says his actions were unforgivable and he’s sorry. His attorney says his client has always been remorseful.
