SANFORD, Fla. (AP) - A 21-year-old central Florida man will spend 30 years in prison after taking a plea deal following the death of his mother.

Joshua Ortiz faced life in prison if he had been convicted on a first-degree murder charge for the Oct. 19, 2014 death of 45-year-old Jackie Ortiz.

The Orlando Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1NPj21N ) reports Ortiz said little but broke into tears when his grandmother, grandfather, father and brother told him they love him.

Ortiz confessed shortly after the killing.

Authorities say he had been arguing with his mother about his drug abuse. Family members found her dead on the kitchen floor later that day. Ortiz was arrested two days later in Maryland.
