PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode island transportation officials say they’ve partially opened the new Great Island Bridge in Narragansett and removed a weight limit that had been in place for 20 years.

The bridge is the only way on and off of Great Island in the fishing village of Galilee. Large trucks were prohibited from crossing.

The Department of Transportation announced the partial opening and removal of the restriction on Wednesday.

The state is spending $8.5 million to replace the 180-foot long bridge.

The DOT says most of the work is expected to be completed in spring 2017.

MIG Corporation is performing the construction in phases, with a single-lane of alternating traffic and a temporary traffic signal.

The Great Island Bridge, built in 1959, was considered structurally deficient.
