FAIR LAWN, N.J. (AP) - Police are blaming a space heater for sparking a fire that killed two women and injured two others in an independent living facility in Fair Lawn.

The fire broke out early Tuesday.

Fire Chief Kirk Wolthouse says the dead women were found in their second-floor bedrooms.

David Moore of the Alliance Against Homelessness of Bergen County tells The Record (https://bit.ly/1TdDsWT ) that the space heater had been removed from the property because it’s prohibited. But he says people are going to do what they want even after being told about fire dangers.

Killed in the blaze were 67-year-old Marilyn Beasley and 60-year-old Marcy Strager.

Police were able to rescue 69-year-old Elaine Demona, who was found on the first floor, and 54-year-old Dorothy Gerano, who was led out her second-floor bedroom window.
