SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Officials say an inmate who was in the medical section of the Santa Barbara County Jail collapsed and became unresponsive and later died at a hospital.

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office says 49 year-old Johnny DeWitt of Santa Maria appeared to be experiencing a medical emergency and that jail personnel immediately responded to assist him. They initiated lifesaving efforts and called for the assistance of fire and medical personnel.

It says DeWitt was transported to a local hospital where he died Thursday, about an hour after collapsing.

The office says the Coroner’s Unit is conducting an investigation.

Dewitt had been in custody since September 28, when he was booked on several charges including criminal threats, unlawful possession of ammunition and drug possession.
