SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - The driver of a Syracuse city bus whose cellphone stopped a stray bullet that ricocheted through the bus’s windshield is to be honored on Thanksgiving.

The family of Reynard Hutchinson and fellow bus drivers are holding a ceremony Thursday morning at a Syracuse church.

Hutchinson tells The Post-Standard of Syracuse (https://bit.ly/1LzrVeg ) he didn’t realize he had been shot when gunfire erupted Oct. 30. He says the bullet went through two jackets and two shirts before piercing his skin and hitting muscle above his stomach. He says he noticed his phone had been cracked when he retrieved it to make a call and found the bullet after paramedics stepped onto the bus.

Hutchinson says he hopes sharing his story will help shed light on the senseless gun violence in Syracuse.
