FOREST CITY, N.C. (AP) - Facebook has awarded more than $70,000 in grants to groups located near its data center in Forest City.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports (https://avlne.ws/1Yya6FF) that server-farm site manager Keven McCammon said Facebook is awarding $72,500 to nine organizations in Cleveland, McDowell, Polk and Rutherford counties.

McCammon announced the grants in a prepared statement. The company based in Menlo Park, California, focused its awards this year on science, technology, engineering, math and literacy education programs.

Facebook has awarded more than $650,000 in grants since beginning the program in 2011. The company will release information for the 2016 grant-funding cycle in the summer.
