PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s health insurance exchange is boosting its staff as open enrollment nears an important deadline.

The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/1NcilyX ) reports that staffing at HealthSource RI has begun to add up to 23 more people. It’s expected to hit 120 phone representatives in December.

Officials say call waiting times have dropped considerably recently after a period earlier this year when some people were on hold for hours.

The insurance exchange has signed up 920 new customers for 2016 since open enrollment began on Oct. 31. Anyone without coverage in 2015 has to elect a plan by Dec. 23 to have coverage effective Jan. 1.

There’s still an opportunity for enrollment for 2016 after Dec. 23. But those customers won’t have coverage until February or March.
