NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Officials say an off-duty police officer was taken to a hospital after his SUV overturned on a New Orleans street.

Jefferson Parish Col. John Fortunato tells The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1Ima5uY ) the single-vehicle crash involving Sgt. Mike Marziale occurred Wednesday. He says Marziale was behind the wheel of his SUV when it suddenly veered off the road and struck a pole.

Joseph Greco, director of the Jefferson Parish East Bank Consolidated Fire Department, says Marziale was unconscious when first responders arrived. They performed CPR on him, Greco says.

He added that he believed the officer had a “medical issue” that caused the crash. Marziale was extricated from the vehicle and taken to University Medical Center.

Police have not released information about his condition.
