MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - An English professor at Rhode Island’s Providence College is Vermont’s latest poet laureate.

Chard deNiord (de-ne-YORD’) was invested Monday during a ceremony in Montpelier.

The resident of Westminster West replaces Sydney Lea as the state’s top poet.

Vermont’s poet laureate is appointed by the governor. Robert Frost was the state’s first poet laureate, appointed by the Legislature in 1961. The position was re-established in 1988 when the four-year-term was created.

deNiord is the author of five books of poetry and he has won numerous awards and prizes.

Before joining the faculty at Providence College in deNiord taught at Vermont’s Putney School.
