BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A special prosecutor has been sworn in to oversee the criminal investigation of Benton County Sheriff Kelley Cradduck.

The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/1PjmMwE ) reports prosecutor Jason Barrett was sworn in Monday morning. According to Benton County Prosecuting Attorney Nathan Smith, he was notified on Oct. 6 about possible wrongdoing by Cradduck, and Smith requested an investigation by the Arkansas State Police.

Court records do not reveal why Cradduck is under investigation, but grievance complaints filed last week claim there is investigation of the sheriff regarding the improper hiring of a jail employee, including an attempt to pay him for time that he did not actually work.

The sheriff denied those allegations last week. Messages to the sheriff from the newspaper were not returned on Monday.
