Marquette

Last season: 13-19.

Nickname: Golden Eagles

Coach: Steve Wojciechowski

Conference: Big East

Key returners: Junior center Luke Fischer (11.0 points, 4.8 rebounds) and sophomore guard Duane Wilson (11.9 points, 2.4 rebounds) return as starters from a team beset last year with injuries and transfers in Wojciechowski’s first year as head coach. They will be counted on for leadership on a team without any scholarship seniors. Jujuan Johnson (7.3 points) and sophomore Sandy Cohen (3.8 points) could begin the year as starters, though Johnson’s game in particular seems to be better suited for a sixth-man role on a young roster.

Who left: Guard Matt Carlino (15.0 points) led the team in scoring in his one season at Marquette as a graduate student. The team will miss the heart and hustle of forward Juan Anderson (8.3 points) and guard Derrick Wilson (5.6 points).

The skinny: The contributions from a touted five-member freshman class may ultimately determine how much of a turnaround Marquette makes this season. The headliner is 6-foot-10 forward Henry Ellenson, a McDonald’s All-American who is locked in a starter. A versatile game could make Ellenson a tough matchup, especially when paired with Fischer in the frontcourt.
