SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) - A Marin County jury has awarded a rancher about $3.2 million for land seized by the state for a Highway 101 project in Novato.

The Marin Independent Journal reports Tuesday (https://bayareane.ws/1KWcCMm ) Lorraine Silveira had sought about $6 million for 34 acres seized by the California Department of Transportation under eminent domain proceedings.

The state argued that just compensation was about $575,000 but according to court documents it offered about $1.8 million.

The jury, which reached its verdict on Oct. 21, valued the property at about $1.7 million when it was taken in 2012 and awarded another $1.5 million for damages to the property as a result of the project.

The state took the land for an interchange project at the Redwood Sanitary Landfill that widened the overpass over Highway 101 near the dump.
