TINTON FALLS, N.J. (AP) - Schools are closed in Tinton Falls after teachers in the Monmouth County school district took the day off.

To protest stalled contract talks, the educators on Tuesday followed a state law that says they are not required to work on Election Day.

Superintendent John Russo tells the Asbury Park Press (https://on.app.com/1GJx73M ) it was not feasible to open school and safely supervise the children. In addition, the district canceled parent-teacher conferences.

Tinton Falls Education President Cherie Ronan says all the teachers want is a contract that compensates them in a manner commensurate with other Monmouth County districts.

The school board says the union turned down a deal in 2014 on a five-year pact that would have boosted teacher pay 2.45 percent.
