DETROIT (AP) - A jury has been seated in a civil trial that will center on a relationship a few years ago between a Detroit City Council member and a teenager.

Charles Pugh lives in New York and doesn’t plan to attend the trial. But his absence can be disclosed to the jury, which was seated Tuesday.

Pugh and the Detroit school district are being sued by a former student who says his civil rights were violated. The former student says Pugh was grooming him for sexual advances while serving as a mentor at Douglass Academy in 2012.

Pugh denies the allegations. Police say the two exchanged sexually explicit text messages.

Pugh quit city government in 2013. He was found months later working at a New York restaurant.
