TOWN CREEK, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a woman has been arrested for trying to hire a hit man to kill the mother of her grandchild.

Multiple news media reported Wednesday that Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell says 54-year-old Sandra Hill Treadway’s murder-for-hire scheme stems from a custody dispute. Mitchell says authorities staged the murder of the child’s mother to help arrest Treadway.

Mitchell says an undercover agent posed as a hit man during a meeting with Treadway. Mitchell says Treadway gave the agent a partial payment, and later arrested after making the final payment.

Treadway is charged with criminal solicitation.

The boy has been taken into custody by the Department of Human Resources.

Treadway is being held at the Lawrence County Jail on a $35,000 bond. It’s not clear whether Treadway has an attorney.
