RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - California authorities say some hikers who stumbled upon a body in a remote desert area helped solve a two-year mystery.

The Press Enterprise reports (https://bit.ly/1Nq75Uk ) that the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release that hikers found the body of 54-year-old Carla Ruth Reyes east of Joshua Tree National Park on Oct. 27.

Sheriff’s officials say Reyes hadn’t been seen or heard from since leaving her Yucca Valley home in February 2013 with only a pillow, a blanket and some medications prescribed to her.

The statement says Reyes’ body was found inside her car, which was stuck in the sand in an area normally accessed only by four-wheel drive vehicles.

Sheriff’s department spokeswoman Cindy Bachman says Reyes drove away without saying anything to her family and left her cell phone behind.
