BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Commissioners in Boynton Beach have approved an $875,000 settlement in a case involving a former police officer accused of rape.

The commission approved the civil case settlement on Tuesday. During a recent criminal trial, jurors found former Officer Stephen Maiorino not guilty on two counts of armed sexual battery by a law-enforcement officer and armed kidnapping.

Maiorino was arrested Oct. 30, 2014, and later resigned from the department.

The victim’s attorney said the civil justice system accomplished what the criminal justice system could not.

The Palm Beach Post (https://bit.ly/1KXi2qm ) reports that as part of the settlement Boynton Beach released a statement saying the city stands behind the police department’s investigation. The statement also says the city hopes the settlement will allow the woman to move on with her life.
