MIAMI (AP) - The majority owner of Dade Medical College has turned himself in to authorities following charges that he illegally bundled over $159,000 in campaign contributions to politicians.

The Miami Herald (https://hrld.us/1H4aHKz ) reports Ernesto Perez was arrested Tuesday.

An affidavit reveals Perez repeatedly asked employees to write campaign contribution checks. Investigator Michael Watson says Perez would then reimburse his employees for the amount. That action is in violation of state law. He was charged with making contributions “in the name of another.”

Defense attorney Michael Band says Perez is liquidating assets to cover court costs and payments expected as part of a plea deal.

Perez announced the closure of all six campuses of the for-profit college on Friday after mounting debt and scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Education.
