HEMET, Calif. (AP) - Riverside County authorities are searching for a drug suspect who escaped police while being handcuffed in Hemet, where three schools were briefly locked down as a precaution.

The Press-Enterprise newspaper says (https://bit.ly/1RSGXk4) the escaped suspect was a passenger in a pickup truck approached by officers on Tuesday.

Lt. Eddie Pust says the driver of the truck was arrested when he reached under the seat and ignored officers’ commands.

As an officer tried to handcuff the passenger, he pulled away and ran off.

Students at three nearby schools were kept at their desks as police canvassed the neighborhood. The search came up empty and the lockdowns were lifted after a few hours.

Investigators have not released a suspect description.

Inside the truck, police found drugs and three loaded guns, including one that had been reported stolen.
