TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A federal prosecutor says a former northwestern Ohio attorney accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from clients has been charged with mail fraud.

A statement from the U.S. attorney for Ohio’s northern district said Tuesday that 72-year Charles Allan Runser, of Van Wert, is charged in federal court in Toledo with one mail fraud count.

A message seeking comment was left at Runser’s attorney’s office Wednesday.

Court documents allege Runser illegally obtained hundreds of thousands of dollars from clients. Authorities say Runser advised clients on wills, estates and trusts and served as an executor and guardian for clients.

The documents say Runser is accused of writing checks to himself, falsifying his firm’s accounting system to create phantom accounts and withdrawing client funds for personal use, among other actions.
