CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Republican Lauren Scott has announced she’ll run for the Sparks Assembly seat currently held by two-term Democrat Mike Sprinkle.

Scott won a Republican primary for the seat in 2014, but lost the general election in the district, which leans heavily Democratic. If elected, she could become the first openly transgender person to serve as a state legislator.

Scott served in the Air Force until 1994. She now works with a start-up company called Alkcon, which develops natural gas processing equipment.

Scott said she advocates for a “balanced approach to governing” and would support changes to Nevada’s new tax package to make it more small business-friendly.

She said she lobbied this session against a bill that would limit bathroom options for transgender students, and would fight against similar measures if elected.
