LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags lowered in honor of former Senate Majority Leader Robert VanderLaan.

Snyder’s office said the flags will be lowered to half-staff on Thursday, the same day as VanderLaan’s funeral at Millbrook Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. He died Sunday at the age of 85.

Snyder says VanderLaan “spent the majority of his life serving his community.” VanderLaan was born in Dutton, Michigan, and served numerous local offices before being elected to the state senate, which he served for 20 years.

After leaving the Senate in 1983, he co-founded Lansing lobbying firm Government Consultant Services Inc.
