PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Two Maine groups will receive federal Housing Preservation Grants to help with low-income housing rehabilitation projects in five counties.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is awarding the grants to Penquis Community Action Program and Western Maine Community Action for projects in Franklin, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Knox and Waldo counties.

Western Maine Community Action will get $92,000 and Penquis Community Action Program will receive $255,800.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced the funding in a joint statement on Tuesday. The senators say the money will benefit Maine’s low-income families during the state’s bitter winters.
