GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Police in Glendale are still trying to identify whoever fatally shot a hammer-wielding man who chased his girlfriend down a street and assaulted her.

Glendale police on Wednesday identified the victim as 26-year-old Andre Cannon of Los Angeles, California.

They say Cannon and his 23-year-old girlfriend were arguing while walking Tuesday afternoon on Rose Lane.

Witnesses say Cannon grabbed a hammer from a parked construction vehicle and chased the woman before striking her with the hammer.

Police say someone then shot Cannon once before fleeing the scene.

Cannon was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police responded to the scene after receiving 911 calls about a man with a hammer chasing a woman down a street before assaulting her.

The name of the Cannon’s girlfriend hasn’t been released yet.
