RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - There’ll be plenty of turkeys for the Thanksgiving table, according to state agricultural statistics.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says the number of turkeys raised in the state this year is expected to total 17.4 million. That’s up 4 percent from last year.

The VDACS estimate is based on a Sept. 1 survey by federal agricultural officials in the nation’s top turkey-producing states.

Tony Banks is a commodity marketing specialist for the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation. He says that despite Virginia’s up numbers, overall U.S. turkey production is down.

Virginia ranks sixth among turkey-producing states.
