DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A high school teacher from Fairfield has been named the 2016 Iowa Teacher of the Year.

Gov. Terry Branstad announced Wednesday that Scott Slechta had been selected as the state’s top teacher. The 57-year-old Slechta teaches English at Fairfield High School.

Branstad said Slechta “exemplifies the great teaching that is taking place in many Iowa classrooms.”

Slechta has worked at Fairfield High School since 1984. He grew up on an Iowa farm and says he was inspired by many of his teachers. In his application for the prize, Slechta said he seeks to teach students the curriculum, but also qualities like persistence and perseverance.

Sclechta lives in Fairfield. He and his wife have four children.
