LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office has paid $225,000 to settle a federal lawsuit filed by the family of a 63-year-old man who died at the parish jail.

An attorney for the family alleges John Horace Howard Jr. was denied proper medical treatment.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1RuYpeI) Howard was booked Nov. 29, 2012, on a disturbing the peace charge for allegedly yelling profanities in public.

The lawsuit says Howard died of a heart attack on Dec. 15 after spending 16 days in solitary confinement, where he never received adequate medical attention despite a long history of health issues and mental illness.
