TYRE, N.Y. (AP) - A group of local residents opposed to a casino planned for New York’s Finger Lakes is suing to derail the project, arguing that local officials didn’t consider how it would affect the surrounding community.

The lawsuit was filed this week in Seneca County by a group of 40 residents of Tyre who oppose plans for the Lago Resort and Casino. The plaintiffs say the town board did the bidding of casino developers by failing to properly scrutinize how the large development would affect the local environment.

An earlier legal challenge forced local officials to re-approve the casino’s development plan.

Town officials and executives at Lago have defended the process behind the project, which they say will create much-needed jobs.

Lago is now awaiting formal licensure by state gambling regulators.
