HOUSTON (AP) - A former Houston-area man has been sentenced to 33 years in prison for a 1986 slaying at his home over an unpaid debt.

A Harris County jury on Tuesday convicted 52-year-old William Porter of murder.

Gerald Oncale (AHN’-kal) Jr. was shot to death in August 1986 at Porter’s residence. Porter originally said Oncale tried to burglarize the place and the shooting was self-defense.

Harris County sheriff’s investigators in 2013 took another look at the cold case.

Authorities say Porter invited Oncale to his home and demanded payment on a debt. Investigators say Porter, following the shooting, staged the scene to make it appear Oncale broke into the residence.

Porter was in a Missouri prison serving time in a drug case when he was charged last year with the Texas slaying.
