PHOENIX (AP) - County officials appointed state Rep. Andrew Sherwood to replace a Democratic state senator from Tempe who resigned to take a new job in Nevada.

The decision Wednesday by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors was made to replace Sen. Ed. Ableser.

The appointment creates a vacancy in the state House.

Sherwood, a Democrat from Tempe, was among three nominees picked by Democratic precinct committee members in the 26th legislative district.

State law says vacancies must be filled from the same party.

Rep. Juan Mendez and 26th district party chairwoman Samantha Pstross also were considered for the post.
