MINOT, N.D. (AP) - The city of Minot will have a female fire chief for the first time in its history.

Grand Forks Battalion Chief Kelli Flermoen is a 20-year veteran of the Grand Forks Fire Department. She’ll succeed Minot Chief CJ Craven, who’s retiring Jan. 8 after 35 years with the department including eight as its leader.

Flermoen sees a lot of similarities between Grand Forks and Minot, including that both communities have fought back from devastating floods.

Flermoen is a Minnesota native who holds associate degrees in fire technology and administration and in criminal justice, a bachelor’s degree in public administration and a master’s degree in strategic leadership.

The North Dakota Firefighter’s Association says Flermoen is believed to be the first female fire chief in one of the state’s four largest cities.
