SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake County has a new city after voters in Millcreek township decided to form their own government.

Unofficial results released Tuesday show 66 percent of people voted in favor of Millcreek city, which will have a population of nearly 62,500 people, making it one of the larger cities in Utah.

The Desert News reports (https://bit.ly/1RU4GR4) that the community just east of Salt Lake City is formed by the neighborhoods of Canyon Rim, East Millcreek, Millcreek and Olympus Cove. It is expected to elect leaders in 2017.

Five other unincorporated communities voted to stay under county leadership as metro townships. Residents in Kearns, Magna, White City, Emigration Canyon and Copperton also decided keep county services like road maintenance as part of a municipal services district.
