CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Hard Rock Exploration has received a state permit to drill a test well into the Rogersville Shale in Putnam County.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail (https://bit.ly/1kablfK ) reports that the Department of Environmental Protection approved the permit for the vertical test well on Monday.

Hard Rock plans to drill the well just south of Winfield’s town limits.

The Rogersville Shale underlies parts of southwestern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky and ranges from 9,000 to 14,000 underground. Cabot Oil and Gas drilled a test well in Putnam County in 2014 just northwest of Hurricane.
