RICHMOND, Ky. (AP) - The Latest news on a Kentucky police officer who was shot and wounded while searching for a robbery suspect Wednesday morning.

Several hundred people have gathered outside a Kentucky police station for a vigil to support the officer shot in the head while searching for a robbery suspect.

Richmond Police Officer Daniel Ellis, 33, suffered life-threatening injuries and remained in the hospital late Wednesday as the crowd grew outside his station. Three have been arrested in connection to the shootout.

Richmond Police Major Steve Gregg described Ellis as “always in a good mood, always had a smile on his face.”

Gregg said he was in line to be promoted to detective next month.

Residents flocked to the station and dropped plates of food and flowers at the door.

Richmond Mayor Jim Barnes said the community was in disbelief that this could happen in a small, quiet town of 32,000 people.

Police have charged a 34-year-old man with attempted murder for allegedly shooting at a Kentucky police officer who was searching a Richmond apartment complex for a robbery suspect.

Raleigh Sizemore was charged with attempted murder of a police officer and first-degree unlawful imprisonment.

Kentucky State Police investigators say 33-year-old Richmond Police Officer Daniel Ellis was searching for a robbery suspect Wednesday morning. He and another officer went to an apartment, where police say Sizemore opened fire on Ellis, who was severely wounded and remains hospitalized.

The second officer returned fire and struck Sizemore. He was treated at the hospital and released to police custody.

Sizemore was booked Wednesday afternoon. Police say he was charged with unlawful imprisonment because he allegedly held someone captive inside the apartment, though police did not provide additional details.

4:45 p.m.

Police identified the Richmond, Kentucky, police officer wounded in a shootout with a robbery suspect as Daniel Ellis, a 7-year veteran of the force.

Kentucky State Police investigators say Ellis was shot in the head at an apartment while searching for a man suspected of trying to mug a woman in a gas station parking lot several hours earlier. He suffered life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.

Police say an officer with Ellis returned fire and wounded the shooting suspect. The man, whose identity police have not yet disclosed, was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon and taken into custody. He has not yet been charged.

Police say another man who was in the home, 25-year-old Gregory Ratliff, who was not injured in the shootout, was arrested and charged with complicity to commit murder of a police officer.

12:30 p.m.

A central Kentucky mayor says a police officer was shot and wounded while searching for a suspect in a robbery investigation. The suspect in the case was also shot and injured.

Richmond Mayor Jim Barnes said it happened when two officers went to the door of a residence. He said when the officers opened the door, the person inside shot one officer in the head and the other officer shot the suspect.

Barnes said both the officer and the suspect were taken to University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

He did not know the conditions of either the officer or the suspect.

Richmond is about 100 miles southeast of Louisville.
