MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s Agency of Transportation is offering special incentives in an effort to recruit new snow plow drivers and mechanics.

From now through Dec. 31, the agency is offering a sign-on bonus of $1,000 to be paid during the first year of service for new hires who have their commercial driver’s license. Those without a CDL can get free training and a $500 bonus over the course of their first year.

Transportation Secretary Chris Cole says a recent wave of retirements has left the agency with an urgent need to fill what he calls critical positions. He says the jobs have traditionally been an entry point for people who end up in long-term careers with the agency.

He says benefits include health and dental care, a pension program and others.
