MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia University’s library system has hired its first “Wikipedian in Residence.”

Kelly Doyle’s goal will be to increase the presence of West Virginia natives in the online encyclopedia, with a particular emphasis on women.

The residency program is intended to foster the creation and improvement of Wikipedia items at the institution where the encyclopedia’s representative is based.

But Wikipedia found that nearly 90 percent of the site’s volunteer editors are male, favoring more content about men.

At WVU, Doyle will also seek gender equity to close that gap.

The WVU Wikipedian in Residence is funded by a $27,100 grant from the Wikimedia Foundation.
