OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The Chickasaw and Muscogee (Creek) nations are among eight tribes selected to receive federal grants for education programs.

The Chickasaw Nation will receive $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Education’s State-Tribal Education, or STEP, partnership. The Muscogee Nation will receive $318,463 in STEP funding and $50,000 through the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Education’s Tribal Education Department, or TED, program.

The STEP program is to build the capacity of tribal education agencies to take over state and local administrative functions based on policies formed under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The TED program is intended to improve the quality of education in Bureau of Indian Education-funded schools.
