MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano is nominating the county’s acting police commissioner to the job permanently.

Mangano said Thursday the county legislature would still need to approve Thomas Krumpter’s appointment.

It was not immediately clear when legislators would vote on the appointment.

Mangano said he thinks Krumpter has “done a great job,” noting a 30 percent drop in crime.

The new title will mean Krumpter’s salary will be reduced by more than $62,000. In his current position, he earns $237,265. The county’s police commissioner can only earn $175,000.

Krumpter said Thursday that he was genuinely honored to be nominated for the permanent post.

The 49-year-old has served in the police department for 23 years. He has been the acting commissioner since 2013.
