MADRAS, Ore. (AP) - Jefferson County Treasurer Deena Goss has resigned nearly a week after a jury found her guilty of stealing county money.

The Bulletin reports (https://bit.ly/1GNyDSv) that Goss maintains her innocence. She has been treasurer since 2003 and is scheduled to be sentenced for forgery, official misconduct and theft on Dec. 1.

She told the Bulletin by phone Wednesday that she was placed in a position that forced her to resign.

Goss did not report to work or collect compensation during her trial. The Jefferson County Commission has repeatedly called for her resignation.

The commission said it would have prohibited Goss from handling cash or writing checks if she didn’t resign.

The state accused her of altering checks paid to various departments and then pocketing cash.
